The main opposition People Power Party(PPP) says it respects the Seoul Southern District Court's decision to slap fines on six incumbent lawmakers for blocking procedures to fast-track a package of reform bills in 2019.
The party said Thursday that, though the convictions were regrettable, they had also confirmed that the ruling was an inevitable act of resistance to protect constitutional order.
The ruling Democratic Party(DP) said that while the six lawmakers had avoided losing their seats in parliament, the PPP must self-reflect and deeply ponder the court's punitive measure.
Earlier in the day, the Seoul court imposed monetary penalties on former and incumbent lawmakers affiliated with the former Liberty Korea Party(LKP), the predecessor of the PPP.
The court ordered PPP Rep. Na Kyung-won, then LKP floor leader, to pay 24 million won, or around 16-thousand U.S. dollars, for obstruction of the performance of official duties.
Current PPP floor leader Song Eon-seog was ordered to pay eleven-point-five million won, and four other PPP lawmakers were slammed with fines ranging from one-point-five million won to eleven-point-five million won.
