Kiwoom Heroes infielder Song Sung-mun is making the move to Major League Baseball.
The secretariat of the Korea Baseball Organization(KBO) on Friday asked Major League Baseball(MLB) to post Song to 30 MLB teams, at the request of Kiwoom Heroes.
Once the MLB announces Song’s posting, it will open up a 30-day window where teams can negotiate contracts with him.
The team that signs Song, who is under a six-year contract, must pay the Heroes a transfer fee under the South Korea-U.S. player contract agreement.
If a contract agreement is not reached by the end of the negotiation period, the posting will be terminated, and Song cannot be posted again until Nov. 1 of next year.
Song appeared in 144 games this season and posted a batting average of point-315 with 26 home runs and an on-base percentage of point-917.
Although Song has mainly played at third base, he’s been a versatile infielder throughout his career, capable of also playing first and second base.
Before applying for posting, the 29-year-old KBO star said he would not force himself to go to the big leagues if the terms of the contract were not satisfactory.
As the Heroes have sent other players to the major leagues in the past, including some of Song’s teammates like Kim Ha-seong and Lee Jung-hoo, attention is being paid to whether Song can follow suit.
