President Lee Jae Myung says if a resolute peace system is established between the two Koreas, it would be desirable not to conduct joint South Korea-U.S. military drills.

Lee told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Turkiye on Monday that some in the South are calling for Seoul to consider reducing or delaying the joint exercises, a sensitive matter in the North, to create a better atmosphere for inter-Korean dialogue.

He said that, in the long run, if peace is firmly established and South Korea is responsible for its own defense, there will be no need for joint military exercises.

However, Lee was quick to add that, at this stage, the subject is not easy to discuss.

He said the government will discuss the topic depending on the situation and conditions and cannot predict in advance how it will unfold.
