South Korea will donate a retiring submarine to Poland.

Military sources said Wednesday that the move aims to support a domestic company bidding for "Orka," Poland’s next-generation submarine acquisition program.

Poland aims to acquire three new three-thousand-ton submarines through the project, which is worth approximately eight trillion won when including maintenance, repair and overhaul.

South Korean defense firm Hanwha Ocean is among the companies bidding to win the multibillion-dollar deal.

The vessel, ROKS Jang Bogo, is the country’s first submarine and is set to retire at the end of 2025 after more than 30 years of service.
