As his insurrection trial wrapped up on Wednesday, former Prime Minister Han Duk-soo testified that he'd never supported or assisted with the Dec. 3 martial law declaration.

He apologized to the public and said he was in shock when former president Yoon Suk Yeol insisted on proceeding with the decree.

Han argued that he could not be held criminally responsible for Yoon's decision, and his lawyers said prosecutors had unlawfully altered their indictment by conflating “aiding” with “engaging in” insurrection.

Prosecutors alleged that Han, as the nation's second-in-command, had enabled an unconstitutional action and requested a 15-year sentence.

The government's side has also argued that Han helped draft a revised martial law order and lied during Yoon's impeachment trial.

The court will issue its verdict on January 21.
