President Lee Jae Myung hailed the successful launch of South Korea’s homegrown space rocket, Nuri, saying the moment had opened a new chapter for the nation’s space development.

Lee posted a congratulatory message on social media Thursday, expressing gratitude and encouragement to the researchers and workers who'd contributed to the launch.

The message came hours after the rocket lifted off from the Naro Space Center in the southwestern coastal county of Goheung at 1:13 a.m. and placed 13 satellites into orbit.

The president thanked residents of Goheung, as well as military, police and fire personnel who helped ensure that the launch proceeded safely.

Lee noted that the launch marked the first time a private company had participated in the rocket’s production and operation from start to finish, demonstrating South Korea’s self-reliance in science and technology.

He added that the nation will continue its work towards becoming one of the world’s top five space powers, pledging to continue supporting scientists and engineers.
