A South Korean citizen has died while fighting for Ukraine in its war against Russia.

The foreign ministry said on Thursday that a funeral for the individual, who had joined the Ukrainian volunteer forces, had taken place on Tuesday, local time, in Kyiv. 

A consular officer from the South Korean embassy in Kyiv attended the ceremony.

The Ukrainian authorities reportedly notified South Korea of the death and the funeral arrangements. 

The government did not release the deceased’s personal details, but he was reportedly in his 50s and was killed in action in May in Donetsk.

Earlier, AFP published a photo from Kyiv showing Ukrainian soldiers kneeling in front of a casket draped with the South Korean flag as a show of respect.
