Prosecutors will not appeal a lower court's ruling that fined former and current People Power Party lawmakers involved in the National Assembly’s 2019 fast-track clash.
The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office said Thursday that it had reached its decision after extensive review, noting that while the lawmakers’ actions—which involved disrupting legislative activity by physical force—were serious, all defendants had been found guilty and that the long-running dispute should end.
Prosecutors added that some sentences fell short of their original requests, but emphasized that the defendants were not motivated by personal gain and that nearly six years have passed since the incident.
In its initial ruling, the Seoul Southern District Court handed down fines ranging from 24 million won for Na Kyung-won to 550 thousand won for Lee Cheol-gyu, with all avoiding penalties that would cost them their parliamentary seats.
With prosecutors declining to appeal—and none of the 26 defendants having filed appeals of their own—the verdict is expected to become final, ensuring all incumbent lawmakers retain their seats.
