The acting chief of the National Police Agency(NPA) has apologized to the nation for the police's actions in restricting access to the National Assembly during former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s imposition of martial law.
Acting Commissioner General Yoo Jae-seong made the apology on Monday while presiding over an online gathering of senior police leaders ahead of the anniversary of the December 3 declaration.
Yoo said that on the night of December 3, the officers who had barred lawmakers from entering the National Assembly had disrupted democracy, violated the law and threatened daily life.
The acting chief said that the force had been mobilized due to poor decisions by some police leadership, which caused significant disappointment and harm to the public.
Yoo vowed that in the future, the police would keep the people in mind and protect the constitutional order, emphasizing that the police will not cooperate with or condone unconstitutional or illegal actions under any circumstances.
