The Chinese government has reaffirmed an earlier promise to work with South Korea to resolve an ongoing history dispute over the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo. Beijing reportedly notified the Seoul government of its reaffirmation through a diplomatic channel. The vice foreign ministers of the two countries held talks on August 23 that culminated in a five-point verbal agreement in which Beijing pledged not to attempt to claim sovereignty over the Goguryeo kingdom. According to a Seoul government official on Tuesday, Beijing has reconfirmed that it will not attempt to distort history on either the central or provincial governmental level. The Chinese government also reportedly said it would ensure that distorted content touching on the Goguryeo kingdom would not be included in revised Chinese history textbooks.
