Police have identified a suspect in a widespread scam targeting KT subscribers.

The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police said on Monday that the suspected perpetrator, a Chinese national of Korean descent, is currently in China and that it had requested an Interpol red notice.

Police believe that the suspect breached mobile phones belonging to KT users in the capital area between August and September, and used them to make unauthorized transactions.

They also suspect that he paid another Chinese national of Korean descent five million won, or around three-thousand-400 U.S. dollars, to drive around an apartment complex with fake cell towers and to breach the phones.

The scheme's 220 victims incurred approximately 140 million won in damages.

The police have so far arrested 13 people, mostly Korean nationals, on suspicion of operating rogue cell towers, money laundering and providing burner phones in connection with the operation.
