The government has put forth a package to counter false and exaggerated advertisements utilizing artificial intelligence, including a labeling system and punitive damages.

The package was announced on Wednesday at a national policy meeting presided over by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok.

The announcement comes amid growing concern that AI-driven advertising in the food and pharmaceutical industries is harming the public.

The Korea Media and Communications Commission will introduce a labeling system for AI-advertised products to help consumers spot fake content.

People who distribute false or distorted information online with the intent to harm others could be fined five times the incurred damage.

The government also plans to drastically raise the upper threshold for penalties under the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising.
