A baby born with her heart outside her body due to a rare heart condition was saved in South Korea for the first time.

Asan Medical Center announced Wednesday that medical professionals from six departments had conducted multiple surgeries to push the infant's heart into her chest and reconstruct her skin.

The baby was born in April with her heart beating outside her body. Her ribs, sternum and abdominal skin were also not fully formed.

The baby suffered from a birth defect called ectopia cordis, which is found in five out of every one million people.

Ninety percent of infants born with the condition die during pregnancy or within three days of their birth.

The occasion marks the first reported case of ectopia cordis successfully treated in the country.
