A worker who was rescued from a collapsed subway construction site near Yeouido Station has died of his injuries.

The worker, a man in his 50s, was found unresponsive and transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Another man in his 50s has also been hospitalized with minor injuries to his ankle, and an additional worker in his 30s was treated for scratches on his wrist. The remaining workers were rescued around 2:52 p.m. after evacuating to an underground shaft.

Yeongdeungpo police and first responders said Thursday that they'd received reports that people were trapped beneath collapsed steel structures at the Sinansan Line passageway near Exit 2 of Yeouido Station around 1:22 p.m.

Authorities suspect the incident occurred at a depth of 70 meters after a rebar fell during concrete pouring.

Police will question the rescued workers to identify potential safety shortcomings at the site.
