Rival political parties agreed to open a parliamentary investigation into last year's deadly Jeju Air crash at Muan International Airport that killed 179 out of 181 people aboard.

A special committee for fact-finding in the December 29 disaster and provision of support for the victims and bereaved families adopted a plan for the investigation on Monday.

The plan received final approval during Monday's plenary session.

The 40-day probe from Monday until January 30 will focus on the transport ministry, the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the interior ministry, the National Police Agency and the Korea Airports Corporation.

The special panel is set to receive briefings from the relevant agencies, request written documents and convene hearings to gather testimonies from witnesses.
