People Power Party(PPP) leader Jang Dong-hyeok has set a new record for the longest filibuster in South Korea’s parliamentary history, speaking for 24 hours.

Jang began speaking at around 11:40 a.m. on Monday, becoming the first leader of the main opposition party to take the podium for a filibuster.

The move came shortly after the National Assembly’s plenary session placed on its agenda a bill to establish a special tribunal for insurrection cases.

Jang surpassed the previous record of 17 hours and 12 minutes set by PPP lawmaker Park Soo-min.

During the debate, Jang argued that the bill was unconstitutional and said that if it were passed, President Lee Jae Myung should exercise his veto power.
