The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution Thursday calling for Pyongyang to recommit to the Non-Proliferation Treaty(NPT), from which the communist state withdrew in 1993.
The IAEA statement also underscored the significance of the six-way talks seeking to peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff.
Prior to the close of the U.N. general assembly, the world's nuclear watchdog adopted the resolution, jointly initiated by the 52 signatory nations and unanimously approved by those attending this year's assembly in New York.
The declaration pressed the secretive stalinist state to reconsider its past deeds of infringing on international obligations such as the NPT.
The IAEA also urged Pyongyang to dismantle all of its nuclear arms programs in a swift, verifiable and irrevocable manner, calling on the North to accept IAEA safety guidelines and allow a nuclear inspection team into the nation.
