Exports Fall 2.3% in First 10 Days of January

South Korea’s exports fell more than two percent in the first ten days of January compared with the same period a year earlier.

Data from the Korea Customs Service released Monday showed that exports totaled 15‑point‑six billion U.S. dollars during the period, down two‑point‑three percent on‑year.

Average daily exports, however, rose four‑point‑seven percent to two‑point‑22 billion dollars, as the number of working days decreased by half a day from a year earlier to seven.

By item, semiconductor shipments surged 45‑point‑six percent, while exports of passenger vehicles declined 24‑point‑seven percent.

Exports to China increased more than 15 percent, whereas shipments to the United States fell by nearly 15 percent.

Imports dropped four‑point‑five percent to 18‑point‑two billion dollars, resulting in a trade deficit of two‑point‑seven billion dollars.
