The main opposition People Power Party(PPP) has decided to change its name for the first time in about five and a half years, ahead of the June 3 local elections.

PPP Secretary General Jung Hee‑yong said the decision was endorsed at the party’s Supreme Council meeting on Monday.

The new name is expected to be finalized next month after a series of steps, including collecting opinions from party members, inviting name proposals from the public and revising the party constitution.

The decision follows an automated response system survey conducted from Friday to Sunday among dues‑paying party members, which showed a majority in favor of a name change.

Party leader Jang Dong‑hyeok had previously announced that the party would move forward with a name change after gauging the views of all members.
