Work is underway to add Taekwondo to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list as a joint nomination from North and South Korea.

The Korea Heritage Service's cultural heritage committee said on Monday that it had selected the martial art as the next candidate for the list during a recent meeting.

The agency plans to submit an application to the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in March.

North Korea already applied to list the sport in March 2024 under the name "Taekwon-Do, traditional martial art in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

A joint inscription of taekwondo would mark the second joint registration of intangible heritage, joining “traditional Korean wrestling, ssirum/ssireum" on the list.
