Civic groups, government agencies and politicians have joined forces to call for the enactment of a bill to prohibit academic backgrounds from being included in job applications.

Some 300 civic groups and ruling Democratic Party Rep. Kang Deuk-gu held a rally at the National Assembly on Tuesday to call for the bill.

The rally saw the attendance of the education and labor ministers, as well as the heads of the National Education Commission and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.

The bill, which Kang proposed last year, aims to combat academic elitism and provide fair opportunities for job seekers by doing away with disadvantages on the basis of what schools they attended.
