Starting Monday, passengers cannot use supplementary batteries aboard flights operated by five airlines affiliated with Hanjin Group, including flag carrier Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

Korean Air said the ban will apply to its domestic and international flights, as well as those of Asiana Airlines and low-cost carriers Jin Air, Air Busan and Air Seoul.

Passengers will be allowed to carry power banks when boarding flights, with a limit of five batteries per person each with a maximum capacity of 100 watt-hours.

But the batteries cannot be used to charge mobile phones, tablet PCs, laptops or cameras.

Similar bans were issued by EastarJet in October and by Jeju Air this week.

The aviation industry has been seeking to reinforce safety regulations for auxiliary batteries in response to recent in-flight fires that were blamed on the lithium component in power banks.
