South Korea's Zaitun unit has officially taken command over rehabilitation works in the Northern Kurdish city of Irbil from the U.S.-led multi-national corps headquarters (MNC-I).

Following the change of command on Friday, the Korean troops will now oversee reconstruction efforts in the region and officially embark on independent peace and rehabilitation efforts in Irbil and Rashkin.

However, the Zaitun unit does not plan to take part in regional police and security missions.

Currently, the maintaining of law and order in the area is entrusted to security forces of the Irbil regional government, while the Iraqi Border Patrol and U.S. forces are in charge of policing the region bordering Turkey and Iran.
