President Lee Jae Myung floated a “sugar tax” and suggested that its revenue could be reinvested in health care.

The president shared a newspaper article showing the results of a survey on the sugar tax on social media on Wednesday.

Lee asked for public views on whether a levy on sugar, similar to current tobacco taxes, could curb sugar consumption and fund reinvestment in regional and public health care.

A presidential office spokesperson said the government plans to gather opinions from various sectors on how sugar consumption affects public health and whether such a tax could fund such reinvestment.

The article Lee shared cited overseas sugar taxes and said that about 80 percent of South Koreans support adopting such a measure.
