A funeral ceremony for former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan was held Saturday at the National Assembly, a week after he died following a heart attack during an official visit to Vietnam.

President Lee Jae Myung and First Lady Kim Hea Kyung attended the ceremony and offered flowers.

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said both the nation and the nation's democracy are indebted to the deceased.

Ahead of the funeral ceremony, a memorial service was held at Lee's office in the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, of which Lee was executive vice chair, and the headquarters of the ruling Democratic Party in Yeouido, Seoul.

Lee will be cremated and laid to rest in Sejong.

A seven-term liberal lawmaker, Lee was the education minister during the Kim Dae-jung administration and prime minister during the Roh Moo-hyun administration.
