January Exports Surge 34% as Semiconductor Shipments Double

South Korea's exports jumped more than 30 percent in January, extending their year‑over‑year growth streak to eight months.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said Sunday that outbound shipments rose 33-point-nine percent from a year earlier to 65-point-85 billion dollars, the highest total ever recorded for January.

Exports have posted annual gains every month since turning positive last June.

Semiconductor shipments more than doubled to 20-point-five billion dollars, topping 20 billion dollars for the second straight month.

Also, auto exports climbed 21-point seven to six-point-07 billion dollars.

Exports to the United States increased 29-point-five percent on year, while shipments to China surged 46-point-seven percent.

Imports rose eleven-point-seven percent on year to 57-point-one billion dollars, leaving a trade surplus of eight-point-seven billion dollars for the month.
