Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party(LDP) won a historic landslide victory in Sunday's general elections.

Japan's Kyodo News and NHK reported on Monday that the LDP had won 128 seats in the lower house of Japan's parliament, securing 316 out of 465 seats and surpassing the two-thirds threshold necessary to introduce a constitutional revision.

The result is the party's most successful in a general election since its foundation in 1955.

Japanese media highlighted that the latest feat marks the first time a single party has secured a two-thirds majority in the lower house since the end of the Pacific War.

In addition to amending Japan's constitution, the party can now enact bills that the House of Councillors rejects, where the ruling coalition remains in the minority.
