An annual conference of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) has kicked off a five-day meeting in Seoul.

Some 220 officials from 34 countries are attending the conference Monday to discuss regional missile proliferation, intangible transfers of technology, strengthened crackdowns on illegal exports and the admission of new members into the MTCR.

Participants plan to issue a chairman's summary, a list of consensus decisions and a press release at the end of this week's conference.

Oh Joon, Director General at Seoul's Foreign Ministry, is presiding over the conference, the 19th since the MTCR was first established in 1987.

The MTCR was set up with the aim of restricting exports of missiles capable of delivering weapons of mass destruction. South Korea joined the regime in 2001.
