South Korea will hold its first summit with five Central Asian countries in September.

Foreign minister Cho Hyun said Thursday that South Korea will host the first South Korea-Central Asia Summit from September 16 to 17.

He made the remark during the first meeting of the preparatory committee tasked with the summit.

He said the gathering will serve as a vital opportunity to expand the horizons of the nation's diplomacy by succeeding and advancing the New Northern Policy.

Cho said he also hopes that by hosting the summit, South Korea will be able to create a basis for not only mutual cooperation but also cooperation on diversifying supply chains with Central Asian countries.

In 2024, South Korea agreed with five Central Asia countries to hold a summit. The five countries are Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
