Some one hundred thousand people have staged a massive rally in front of Seoul City Hall, protesting the government's plan to scrap the National Security Law.

The crowd at the Monday afternoon rally included a former prime minister, a former defense minister, retired members of the military and conservative Christians.

Demonstrators called for the ruling camp to keep the law in place, arguing that the abolishment of the anti-Communist legislation would only benefit North Korea, disrupt South Korean society and undermine national defense.

After a rally, some demonstrators tried to march towards the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae, but were blocked by police. Crowds dispersed in the evening and there were no reports of injuries or arrests.

The demonstration was held on the first day of the National Assembly's annual inspections of government agencies, during which the National Security Law is likely to be among the most contested issues.

The ruling Uri Party wants to scrap the law while the main opposition Grand National Party is deadset against the move.
