Bobsled silver medalist Won Yun-jong has become the first South Korean winter athlete elected to the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee(IOC).

The IOC announced the voting results for the Athletes’ Commission on Thursday at the athletes’ village for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

Won finished first among eleven candidates by securing one-thousand-176 votes from two-thousand-393 athletes who cast their ballots.

His eight-year term will run through 2034.

With his election, Won became the third South Korean to be elected to the IOC Athletes’ Commission, after the 2004 Olympic taekwondo champion Moon Dae-sung and the 2004 Olympic table tennis gold medalist Ryu Seung-min, who is currently president of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee.

His election brings the number of active IOC members from South Korea to two.
