South Korea attended the inaugural meeting of the U.S.-led Board of Peace launched last month.

Seoul's Foreign Ministry said Friday that former  South Korean Ambassador to Egypt Kim Yong-hyun had represented the South Korean government at the first meeting in Washington on Thursday.

The ministry said the government has supported Trump’s leadership in promoting peace in Gaza, adding it will continue to join international efforts aimed at fostering peace and stability in the Middle East.

South Korea participated in the meeting as a non-member observer.

Asked about the possibility of formally joining the Board of Peace in the future, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il said on Thursday that the government would carefully review the matter, taking all relevant factors into consideration.

At the meeting, Trump mentioned South Korea as one of the countries that will take part in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
