U.S. President Donald Trump has warned trading partners that he could hit them with “higher tariffs” if they attempt to exploit the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that struck down his reciprocal levies.
On Truth Social on Monday, Trump warned that any country that wants to “play games” with the court decision, especially those that have "ripped off" the U.S. for years, will receive higher rates than those recently agreed to.
His remarks appear to be a warning to countries that have struck trade deals with Washington, including pledges of large-scale U.S. investments or purchases of American goods in exchange for lower tariff rates.
Trump added the phrase “Buyer Beware,” implying that responsibility for any collapse of trade agreements would rest with the other parties.
He also stated in a separate post that, as president, he did not need Congressional approval to impose tariffs.
Trump on Saturday announced that he would impose a 15 percent global tariff, up from the ten percent announced a day earlier, after the Supreme Court struck down most of his tariffs.
