Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was promoted to department head of the ruling Workers’ Party during the ongoing party congress.

The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency reported on Tuesday that the first plenary meeting of the ruling party’s 9th Central Committee, held the previous day, had elected members of the Politburo and Politburo Presidium and appointed party department directors.

Kim Yo-jong, previously a deputy department director, was reportedly promoted to department director, a position equivalent to a ministerial rank. 

KCNA did not disclose which department she would oversee.

Kim also reentered the party’s Politburo as an alternate.
