President Lee Jae Myung, who holds a hard-line stance on curbing soaring housing prices in the capital region, is now calling for lower agricultural land prices in rural areas.

Presiding over a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Lee said people who want to take up farming are facing difficulties obtaining land due to high prices of up to 300-thousand won, or around 207 U.S. dollars, for every three-point-three square meters.

The volatile housing market in the capital and surrounding areas seem to have entered a state of lull, Lee said, as he urged officials to also focus on agricultural land prices.

The president said agricultural lands have increasingly become subjects of real estate speculation, noting that although owners who do not use their land for farming should be ordered to sell, such orders are never actually issued.

Lee called such acts a violation of the Constitution and instructed officials to look into conducting necessary investigations and issuing sales orders.
