A fire broke out at an apartment in the Daechi-dong neighborhood of Seoul's Gangnam District on Tuesday, leaving one person dead and two others injured.
According to authorities, the fire started at around 6:20 a.m. on the eighth floor of one of the buildings in the Eunma Apartments complex.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze after roughly an hour, but the teenaged daughter of the family in the affected unit was tragically found dead on the veranda.
The girl's mother and younger sister suffered burns and smoke inhalation and were transferred to a local hospital.
The family reportedly moved into the apartment less than a week ago.
Police and fire authorities believe the fire started in the living room but are trying to determine the exact cause of the incident that also forced the evacuation of some 70 residents in the building.
The apartment complex, which is set to undergo reconstruction, was built in 1979 and has no sprinkler system, which was made mandatory in 1992.
