China says the recent controversy over South Korea's past nuclear experiments will positively affect the six-way talks as well as efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula in the long run.
The Foreign Ministry said in a report to parliamentary panel that if South Korea becomes more dedicated to maintaining nuclear transparency as a result of the recent nuclear experiment controversy, it would, in the long run, positively affect ongoing efforts to resolve North Korea's nuclear issue.
However, the report said, in the short run, the controversy would only provide the North with another excuse to reject the six-party talks.
The report also quoted the Chinese government as saying that South Korea's nuclear controversy has shown the effectiveness of newly added protocol to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The report went on to say that with the active cooperation of the Seoul government, the controversy would set a good precedent for global nonproliferation efforts.
