Conscientious Objectors to File Suit to UNHCHR

Written: 2004-10-07 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

Two South Korean conscientious objectors who have been found guilty for refusing mandatory military service are taking their case to the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. It's the first time any South Korean has appealed such a case to the U.N. body.

The attorney for the two conscientious objectors and a group representing other such objectors said they would file the appeal with the U.N. body since their court proceedings have been completed.

The U.N. Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution in April that calls for the recognition of the right to refuse military obligations based on conscience and religion.
