Pres. Roh Meets with Chinese Premier in Hanoi

President Roh Moo-hyun has discussed pending bilateral issues with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting underway in Hanoi.

During their meeting Thursday night, Roh said the ongoing history dispute over the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo should be smoothly resolved by actively implementing a five-point verbal agreement reached between the two countries in August.

Under the agreement reached between the vice foreign ministers of the two nations, Beijing pledged not to attempt to claim sovereignty over the Goguryeo kingdom.

Wen replied that the two countries should exert joint efforts to deal with the matter in a way that won't hamper the comprehensive partnership of the two countries.

On North Korea's nuclear issue, Roh asked for Beijing's active and constructive role for the early resumption of the stalled six-way nuclear talks. Wen in turn expressed support for Seoul's efforts to resolve the nuclear standoff, saying a peaceful resolution of Pyongyang's nuclear issue is essential.

Roh and Wen also discussed ways to expand cooperation in various other fields, including the exchange of high-level officials, as well as boost bilateral trade to 200 billion U.S. dollars within the next five years.
