U.S. President George W. Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao discussed bilateral issues and efforts to settle North Korea's nuclear issue.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said that in a telephone conversation Thursday Hu reiterated China's commitment to the six-party nuclear talks involving the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia.

McClellan said the two leaders also discussed the issue of the Taiwan Strait. Bush reportedly expressed his support for Beijing's "One China" policy, but also warned against "any unilateral attempt" to change the status quo regarding Taiwan and encouraged Beijing to look for opportunities for cross-strait dialogue.

McClellan added that the two leaders also discussed economic issues, including China's commitment to move forward firmly and steadily to a market-based, flexible exchange rate.
