The South Korean Zaitun unit stationed in Iraq is reported to be working with cultural experts to restore one of the oldest castles in the world, as its first reconstruction project in the war-torn country.

Officials said Friday the Korean troops deployed to the gulf state last month for peaceful rehabilitation missions, are seeking to rebuild the castle built centuries ago in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil.

For the project, the troops plan to employ some 50 locals for assistance and consult with UNESCO archeologists. Restoration work may begin as early as next year.

The Kurdish-controlled Irbil has more than 600 historical sites including the castle, which houses many valuable cultural assets.
