A U.S. report shows that South Korea and Japan have a higher enrollment rate of male students into four-year universities than their female counterparts.
The figure contrasts that of other members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In most member states, the enrollment rate was on average ten percentage point higher for female students, with the exception of five nations including the two Asian countries.
The entrance rate of South Korean males into four-year universities in 2001 was 7 percentage point higher than that of the females, ranking 3rd among the OECD countries following Japan and Switzerland.
The findings, based on a statistics during the 1998-2001 period, was reported in the June issue of a U.S. education magazine called Programs for Educational Opportunity.
