South Korea and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to work to swiftly resume six-way talks on settling North Korea's nuclear standoff.
Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura and South Korea's Ambassador to Japan, Ra Jong-il, met in Tokyo Tuesday and agreed to closely cooperate for the prompt resumption of the six-nation nuclear talks.
On South Korea's past nuclear activities, Ra explained that Seoul would fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) when the Board of Governors from the U.N. nuclear watchdog convenes next month in Vienna.
In reply, Machimura expressed hope that a substantial investigation report on Seoul's nuclear experiments would be submitted to the IAEA board for review.
Last month, two separate IAEA teams visited South Korea to investigate Seoul's acknowledgement that its scientists produced small amounts of plutonium and enriched uranium in the 1980s and in 2000 without the knowledge or approval of the government.
Meanwhile, Machimura is scheduled to visit Seoul early next month to discuss matters of mutual concern with his South Korean counterpart Ban Ki-moon. The exact date of his trip is yet to be confirmed, but according to sources in Tokyo, it is expected to take place around November 6th or 7th.
