N. Korean Refugee Facility Sought in Mongolia

A Seoul-based missionary group dedicated to supporting North Korean refugees says it is currently negotiating with the Mongolian government to build a refugee camp in the country. The move follows U.S. President George W. Bush's approval of the North Korean Human Rights Act on Tuesday.

The Doorihana Missionary Group said Thursday that the Mongolian government has been supportive of the plan and has already provided land on which to build the refugee facility after talks in May.

The support group said it would hold working-level talks on the matter in mid-November.

Officials with the group added, however, that the project is expected to face difficulties as the Chinese and South Korean governments have opposed the plan over fears that it may provoke Pyongyang.

Meanwhile, a U.S.-based North Korean support group, Defense Forum Foundation, said it is designing a blueprint for the construction of a temporary facility for North Korean escapees in China.
