In Washington, the State Department says officials from North Korea and the U.S. met for informal talks in New York earlier this week.

Asked about reports of the unofficial talks, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the two sides held talks on Monday and sought ways to secure transparency in food distribution in the impoverished Stalinist state.
