Pyongyang has again criticized Seoul for branding the North as a “main threat”in South Korean government documents.
Uriminzokkiri.com, a state-run North Korean website, said Sunday that Seoul should identify U.S. troops, and not Pyongyang, as the main obstacle to establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula. Uriminzokkiri means “our people” in Korean.
The statement said that as long as the U.S. military is present in South Korea, it would be impossible for the South Korean people to free themselves from the ever-present threat of war and that reunification would be hard to achieve.
The statement comes as Seoul is considering toning down its definition of North Korea from “main enemy” to “main threat” in its new defense white paper, which is set to resume publication in January after a three-year suspension due to a dispute over the term,“main enemy.”
Seoul’s proposal immediately sparked criticism from the communist state, which argues that there is no difference between the two terms in that they both imply an intent to overthrow the North’s regime.
