Bush Vows to Encourage Freedom, Democracy

Re-elected U.S. President George W. Bush has vowed to battle terrorism and work to encourage freedom and democracy.

In his first press conference since winning a second four-year term, Bush said Friday that he will continue to reach out to U.S. friends and allies and to partners in the E.U. and NATO to promote development and progress, to defeat terrorists and to encourage freedom and democracy as alternatives to tyranny and terror.

With global and U.S. public opinion polarized over the war in Iraq, Bush pledged to reach out to those who share his administration's goals and pointed to the war on terrorism he declared after the September 11 attacks as a unifying force.
