An opposition lawmaker says he will submit a bill to the National Assembly this week that will allow overseas Koreans to cast absentee ballots in the domestic presidential election.
Under the bill being sponsored by Rep. Hong Joon-pyo of the main opposition Grand National Party, ethnic Koreans with Korean nationality residing abroad will be able to cast their ballots at South Korean diplomatic missions by registering 30 days before election day.
Under current laws, Koreans living overseas can exercise their voting right after returning to South Korea and having their residency registered in their homeland.
