Executive Director of the Korea Energy Development Organization (KEDO), Charles Kartman, will reportedly visit North Korea for four days from Saturday.
Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper said Thursday that Kartman will convey to Pyongyang KEDO's decision to extend the suspension of the construction of light water reactors in the communist state.
During his stay, Kartman is slated to meet Vice Foreign Minister Kim Gye-kwan, the North's chief negotiator for the six-way nuclear talks, and Ri Jae-sun, a top official in charge of nuclear affairs.
The U.S.-led international consortium decided to suspend the construction of light water reactors in the North last December after negotiations over the North's nuclear arms program hit a deadlock.
According to the Japanese paper, the U.S appears to have temporarily agreed to the extension of the suspension and will likely make a final decision later, depending on whether Pyongyang returns to the fold of multilateral nuke talks.
Washington has insisted on terminating the project all together, while South Korea and Japan continue to support a one-year extension of the project's suspension.
