A recent survey finds eight out of ten Japanese support imposing economic sanctions against North Korea if Pyongyang refuses to cooperate in the issue of Japanese abductees.

The survey was conducted by Japan's Sankei Shimbun on 500 men and women in Tokyo.

According to the survey, 79.4 percent of the respondents said they would support economic sanctions against the North if the communist regime fails to respond sincerely to calls by Tokyo to reinvestigate the whereabouts of the missing Japanese.

Meanwhile, some 61 percent said they opposed the extension of Japan's troop deployment in Iraq.
